Decking the halls can be as simple and enjoyable as foraging around your house or neighborhood and mixing your finds with family treasures.
Anything outside is fair game, especially if you have a couple cans of spray paint in a metallic and a white. Gather evergreens like white pine, cedar, and holly for the beauty, longevity, and fresh scent, and whatever branches, bark, acorns, seed pods, pumpkins, vines, and wild berries catch your eye. A few oak leaves on a twig and a handful of acorns can transform the inside of your home a winter wonderland with a little metallic spray paint. A hollowed-out birch log outfitted with a plastic container with some floral oasis purchased at your local florist or a craft store is the perfect base to create a fabulous fireplace decoration or centerpiece. Use mason jars or recycle cans by gathering a holiday napkin to cover and tying around the top with twine, Christmas tins or novelty containers, or glass bowls. Cones and branches become snow-covered with judicious use of some white spray paint. Experiment with silver-painted squash or golden acorns.
To go a notch beyond totally natural, weave in a string of battery-powered fairy lights or ribbon garlands or bows, stick in some candy canes, or add family treasures like ornaments or figurines. To add a final touch, finish off your woodland creation with dramatic white, green or berry-hued orchids, tuck bright gerbera daisies in ornament balls and holly, complete that crystal bowl with mixed evergreens and pine cones with warm garnet-colored or ethereal wintery white roses.
A wonderland to enjoy throughout the holidays!
